Teaching Effectiveness

Like most scholars, I take pride in my teaching. At the University of Illinois, the scores of my teaching evaluations qualified me for the "List of Teachers Ranked Excellent by Their Students," an honor reserved for those in the top 10th percentile of instructors. Throughout my teaching career at Penn State, student evaluations of my teaching effectiveness have run consistently in the range of 6.0-7.0 on a scale of 1.0-7.0.

The following quotations are copied from student responses to the open-ended question, “What Helped you learn in this course?” which appeared on all evaluations. I have selected some of my favorites from each course.

CAS 100A: Effective Speech

“Frank was an extremely entertaining teacher, but at the same time he made sure everyone learned something everyday. He was always open to help students in any way possible. He made his class enjoyable which made us more open to learning something new.”

“The instructor is amazing. He made us feel like we were learning valuable skills that we can use elsewhere, and made speaking comfortable in front of the classroom even though public speaking is really stressful.”

CAS 283: Communication and Technology

“It is hard to learn when you have a teacher that just throws you into a computer lab and already expects you to know everything, but Frank took his time showing us everything and did not mind helping us with all of our questions when we made our websites.

“The instructor was very helpful and you could tell he liked what he was teaching us. It made it a little more enjoyable.”

CAS 100C: Message Analysis
World Campus

“Mr. Stec was very organized teacher. He had each lesson planned out and was always there to answer our questions. He always gives us constructive criticism after each speech and I know he cares about us. He is always there to help and wants us to learn how to be effective speakers.”

“The direct feedback on assignments was extremely helpful. I was not just given a grade, but shown exactly what I did well and needed to get better at on the documents that I submitted.”

“Frank Stec is a really good teacher. The lessons were thoroughly explained and instructor's comments helped in understanding any areas of difficulty.”

“My professor helped the class learn with interactive projects, lectures, and good presentations. Overall, the instructor did such a great job with this course that the things I have learned will stick with me throughout my further education. Excellent instructor.”
